Apenas dos semanas después de un barrido histórico en las tres categorías del AMA Supercross 2023, el Team Honda HRC está en Pala, California, listo para comenzar la serie AMA Pro Motocross en Fox Raceway, una pista donde han disfrutado de mucho éxito en los últimos años. Los pilotos y el equipo han participado hoy en una rueda de prensa de pretemporada en el Pala Casino Spa Resort, seguida de sesiones de pilotaje en la pista donde correrán el sábado.

El equipo tiene motivos para el optimismo mientras se prepara para hacer la transición de las carreras en estadios a la competición "al aire libre". Con sólo 23 años, Chase Sexton acaba de ganar el campeonato de la categoría reina del AMA Supercross, y el año pasado terminó segundo en una lucha históricamente reñida por el título del AMA Pro Motocross 450 con Eli Tomac, que está lesionado.

"Volé a casa desde Salt Lake el domingo, y luego volví a los entrenamientos al aire libre el martes", dijo Sexton en la rueda de prensa de hoy. "No siento que me falte motivación ahora mismo. La semana pasada estuve entrenado tres días y me metí más de siete horas encima de la moto. Ahora, he vuelto al trabajo con ganas de competir en este campeonato de 450".

Jett Lawrence debutará en la categoría AMA 450. El australiano de 19 años concluyó su exitosa carrera en 250 en la final del AMA Supercross en Salt Lake City, y con cuatro títulos del cuarto de litro en su haber, está ansioso por alcanzar el éxito sobre la Honda CRF450RWE de fábrica. Jett ha pilotado la moto en una ocasión anterior, ganando la categoría Open en el Motocross de las Naciones en Michigan el pasado mes de septiembre.

"Obviamente, es muy emocionante para mí", dijo Jett Lawrence. "Es como volver a empezar desde abajo y ver dónde acabo en la primera ronda. Tuve suerte de correr [Supercross] en la Costa Oeste, así que pude hacer bastantes pruebas de 450 durante los descansos, cuando los chicos de la Costa Este se iban. Nos sentimos bien. Hemos tenido mucha suerte en esta pista, y estoy emocionado por empezar este nuevo capítulo en mi vida. Va a ser divertido aprender de algunos de estos chicos mayores".

El esfuerzo del Team Honda HRC en la categoría de 250 está encabezado por Hunter Lawrence, a quien muchos expertos favorecen para hacerse con el título de este año. El piloto de 23 años luchó con su hermano y compañero de equipo Jett Lawrence en la lucha por el campeonato del año pasado antes de terminar tercero, y recientemente ganó la corona de la Región Este del AMA 250SX.

"Hemos equilibrado [nuestra preparación] bastante bien", dijo Hunter Lawrence. "Esperemos que se note en las primeras rondas. Evidentemente, es duro cuando pasas de estar tan metido en el Supercross a tener un fin de semana libre para hacer el cambio completo. Es un equilibrio intermedio, así que espero haberlo hecho bien. Estoy deseando pasar un buen verano".

Chance Hymas también pilotará una CRF250R. El piloto de Idaho, que hoy cumple 18 años, debutó como profesional en este circuito el año pasado, pero desde entonces sólo ha disputado algunas carreras. A partir del sábado, Hymas competirá a tiempo completo.

"Estoy emocionado por empezar la primera ronda", dijo Hymas. "No he corrido mucho este año, así que quiero volver a competir. He estado practicando mucho, pero estoy listo para poner el trabajo a prueba y ver cómo va".

Esta temporada Honda celebra el 50 aniversario de su primera moto de motocross de producción, la CR250M Elsinore, con la que Gary Jones ganó el primer Campeonato AMA de Motocross de Honda en 1973.
